How We Ranked the Groups

The 2026 World Cup draw produced twelve very different groups. At one extreme you have the confirmed Group of Death — three legitimate title contenders crammed into a single pool. At the other, a group so forgiving that the host nation is already being handed a near-guaranteed Round of 32 spot. Everything in between runs the full spectrum from genuine three-way scrambles to one-team processions.

To rank every group, we combined three measures: average FIFA ranking of the four teams, Opta Power Ratings (which weight recent form and squad quality more dynamically than the static FIFA table), and a qualitative assessment of upset potential — because a group containing one elite side and three lightweights is not the same difficulty as a group of four evenly matched teams.

Key rule change for 2026: With 48 teams and 12 groups, the top two from each group advance automatically to the Round of 32 — plus the eight best third-placed teams. That means finishing third is no longer a death sentence, and some teams in very hard groups may still progress on points total even without winning their group. That context shapes every group prediction below.

#1 Hardest — Group I ☠️

I
Ranked #1 Hardest · Group of Death
🇫🇷 France  ·  🇳🇴 Norway  ·  🇸🇳 Senegal  ·  🇮🇶 Iraq
Difficulty ☠️ DEATH
✓ France advance ⚡ Norway vs Senegal for 2nd ✗ Iraq exit

There is no debate. According to Opta's Power Rankings, Group I is statistically the strongest pool at the entire 2026 World Cup, with an average power rating of 77.1 — more than five points clear of the next most competitive group. France are the world number one, Norway have Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard at the peak of their powers, and Senegal are the reigning African champions. Iraq are the only team here without realistic title aspirations, and even they qualified from the inter-confederation playoffs.

France enter as outright tournament favourites at roughly +500 (5/1). Kylian Mbappé leads an attack so deep that Ousmane Dembélé and Marcus Thuram would walk into almost any other squad at this tournament. Didier Deschamps has never lost a group stage match as France manager. They will win Group I.

The real contest is for second. Norway are arguably the most dangerous second-best team at this World Cup — Haaland has scored 47 goals in 55 internationals and arrives off back-to-back treble seasons at Manchester City. Ødegaard is the engine of an Arsenal side that won the Premier League in 2024–25. Norway are not a one-man team any more, and their qualifying campaign — unbeaten in UEFA's most competitive group — confirmed it. Senegal, AFCON 2025 winners, are the counter-argument. Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Idrissa Gana Gueye give them a spine that Norway cannot match for experience. The Norway–Senegal match on Matchday 2 is the most anticipated group-stage fixture of the entire tournament.

Iraq are here as the wild card. They qualified via the inter-confederation playoff and their FIFA ranking of 57th reflects the gap. They will do well to take a point, but their passionate, physical style could make life uncomfortable for Senegal in their direct matchup — which could be decisive for the group standings.

Betting angle: Norway to advance from Group I is an underrated play. At roughly +275 to win the group, the implied probability that they finish second or better is somewhere around 65%. For a team with arguably the best striker at the tournament, that is value. Check Norway group-stage odds at Bet365 or DraftKings. *

#2 Hardest — Group C

C
Ranked #2 Hardest · Two Top-10 Nations
🇧🇷 Brazil  ·  🇲🇦 Morocco  ·  🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland  ·  🇭🇹 Haiti
Difficulty ★★★★★
✓ Brazil advance ✓ Morocco advance ✗ Scotland / Haiti battle for 3rd

Group C is the only group in the entire tournament featuring two teams from the FIFA top ten: Brazil (6th) and Morocco (8th). The opening fixture — Brazil vs Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium — is as close to a knockout-round tie as the group stage is likely to offer. Whoever wins that match is almost certainly guaranteed top spot; whoever loses faces an anxious final two games.

Brazil under Carlo Ancelotti have brought a new composure and tactical discipline to the Seleção. The attacking options remain extraordinary — Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Endrick, and Gabriel Martinelli represent arguably the most dangerous front line at this World Cup. Prediction markets give Brazil a 76–77% chance of winning Group C, though their form in qualifying — six defeats in 18 games — is a quiet warning sign that this team is not infallible.

Morocco won AFCON 2025 after their historic 2022 run. They are better than they were in Qatar, with more Champions League experience across the squad. Achraf Hakimi, Hakim Ziyech, and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou remain the backbone. Their road to 2026 started at the 2022 semi-final — they are not coming here to lose in the group stage.

Scotland are the side that complicates everything. Steve Clarke's team qualified in dramatic fashion and carries some genuine Premier League quality through the middle of the pitch. They will sit deep, be exceptionally hard to break down, and they are capable of taking points off teams ranked above them. Haiti, meanwhile, are at their first World Cup since 1974 — expect energy, chaos, and an atmosphere that the MetLife crowd will love.

The Brazilian warning: Brazil's six qualifying losses are more than any other South American side. Ancelotti has improved their defensive structure, but if Vinícius Júnior picks up an injury or early yellow cards, the Seleção become a different — and more vulnerable — team very quickly.

#3 Hardest — Group F

F
Ranked #3 Hardest · Best Average Opta Rating
🇳🇱 Netherlands  ·  🇯🇵 Japan  ·  🇸🇪 Sweden  ·  🇹🇳 Tunisia
Difficulty ★★★★½
✓ Netherlands advance ⚡ Japan vs Sweden for 2nd ✗ Tunisia tough ask

Opta's Power Rankings actually rate Group F as having the best combined average of the four confirmed teams — the three main contenders (Netherlands, Japan, Sweden) are all formidable, and Tunisia are no pushovers. What makes this group fascinating is the near-perfect balance between the second, third, and fourth-placed teams.

The Netherlands (7th in FIFA rankings) are clear favourites under Ronald Koeman. Virgil van Dijk anchors one of Europe's most organised defences. Memphis Depay's return to form adds an attacking dimension. The Dutch have the squad depth and experience to win the group comfortably — but only if they avoid a slow start.

Japan are the most feared second-placed team in this group. Their record at recent World Cups speaks for itself: they beat Germany and Spain in Qatar 2022; they led Belgium 2–0 at Russia 2018. Takefusa Kubo, Kaoru Mitoma, and Wataru Endo bring genuine Premier League and La Liga quality. Japan's pressing structure under Hajime Moriyasu is one of the most difficult systems in world football to play against. Sweden, qualifying through the UEFA playoff, have Zlatan Ibrahimović's era comfortably behind them but possess a new identity built on Alexander Isak, Victor Nilsson Lindelöf, and a rigidly organised defensive block.

The upset scenario: Japan beat Netherlands 1–0. It happened in Qatar against Spain and Germany — and Japan's tactical discipline makes them capable of exactly this kind of result against a Dutch side that can be ponderous in possession.

#4 Hardest — Group L

L
Ranked #4 Hardest · England's Group
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England  ·  🇭🇷 Croatia  ·  🇬🇭 Ghana  ·  🇵🇦 Panama
Difficulty ★★★★
✓ England advance ✓ Croatia advance ⚡ Ghana dark horse for 3rd

England go into Group L as heavy favourites, and rightly so. Jude Bellingham is arguably the best player in European football. Harry Kane, carrying the most Premier League goals in history into his final World Cup, remains one of the most complete strikers on the planet. The supporting cast — Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold — is extraordinary. England should win this group.

The caveat is England's well-documented habit of making things unnecessarily difficult for themselves. They were nearly eliminated from Euro 2024 in the group stage despite a squad that should have been breezing through. Manager Gareth Southgate's departure hasn't entirely changed that narrative — the new setup is more attack-minded, but the same psychological vulnerabilities remain.

Croatia have been written off at every tournament since 2018 and have made the semi-finals twice. An ageing Luka Modrić leads what may be his final World Cup, and Croatia's tactical intelligence and tournament resilience are well established. Ghana have dropped significantly in the Opta Power Rankings (71st) but can call on talented players across European leagues. Panama, appearing at their third World Cup, are organised and physical but lack the quality to threaten the top two.

#5 Hardest — Group K

K
Ranked #5 Hardest · Top-Two Battle
🇵🇹 Portugal  ·  🇨🇴 Colombia  ·  🇨🇩 DR Congo  ·  🇺🇿 Uzbekistan
Difficulty ★★★½
✓ Portugal advance ✓ Colombia advance ⚡ DR Congo third-place threat

Portugal vs Colombia is appointment viewing. Both are top-15 FIFA ranked teams at the peak of a new generation — and the winner of that match will almost certainly top the group. Portugal (6th) with Cristiano Ronaldo's swansong and Bruno Fernandes pulling the strings. Colombia (13th) with James Rodríguez orchestrating and Luis Díaz providing the kind of dribbling genius that can destroy any defence in world football.

DR Congo return to the tournament for the first time in 52 years — no longer the "Zaïre" side that became a punchline in 1974. A new generation of talent playing across European leagues makes them genuine wild cards for a third-place finish. Uzbekistan are first-time qualifiers and will be learning on the biggest stage.

Key match: Portugal vs Colombia (Matchday 1). If Colombia win, the group becomes genuinely uncertain. If Portugal win by a comfortable margin, the top-two picture is effectively settled by the end of the first round of fixtures.

#6 Hardest — Group J

J
Ranked #6 Hardest · Argentina's Group
🇦🇷 Argentina  ·  🇩🇿 Algeria  ·  🇦🇹 Austria  ·  🇯🇴 Jordan
Difficulty ★★★
✓ Argentina advance ⚡ Algeria or Austria for 2nd ✗ Jordan tough ask

With or without Lionel Messi — who at 38 will likely feature only selectively — Argentina are defending World Cup champions, ranked 3rd in the world, and clear Group J favourites. Inter Miami's Messi will be managed carefully through the tournament, but the squad around him has evolved: Julián Álvarez is now a Champions League winner, Rodrigo De Paul remains the heartbeat of the midfield, and Lautaro Martínez continues to be one of Serie A's most clinical strikers.

The second spot is genuinely competitive. Algeria, ranked in the mid-30s, are a strong AFCON-calibre team with Premier League and Ligue 1 quality throughout the squad. Austria have been quietly consistent in European qualifiers and carry under-the-radar talent in David Alaba (fitness permitting) and Marcel Sabitzer. Jordan are the group's clear outsiders but qualified respectably from the AFC and will not disgrace themselves.

#7 Hardest — Group H

H
Ranked #7 Hardest · Upset Potential
🇪🇸 Spain  ·  🇺🇾 Uruguay  ·  🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia  ·  🇨🇻 Cape Verde
Difficulty ★★★
✓ Spain advance ✓ Uruguay advance ⚡ Saudi Arabia upset threat

Spain, ranked 4th in the world and Euro 2024 champions, are the class of this group. Rodri — the best defensive midfielder on the planet — anchors a side built on ball retention, positional play, and an extraordinary conveyor belt of technical talent. They should top Group H without serious difficulty.

Behind Spain, it gets interesting. Uruguay (16th) are, as discussed in our dark horse analysis, one of the most undervalued teams at this tournament. Darwin Núñez, Federico Valverde, and a Marcelo Bielsa–coached defensive unit that conceded just 11 goals across all of CONMEBOL qualifying. They are not here to make up the numbers. Saudi Arabia are the wildcard — remember, they beat Argentina 2–1 at Qatar 2022 in one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. Do not dismiss them.

#8 Hardest — Group D

D
Ranked #8 Hardest · Co-Host USA's Group
🇺🇸 USA  ·  🇵🇾 Paraguay  ·  🇦🇺 Australia  ·  🇹🇷 Türkiye
Difficulty ★★★
✓ USA advance ⚡ Türkiye vs Australia for 2nd ✗ Paraguay tough ask

The co-hosts drew a manageable group. USA, boosted by playing in front of home crowds and backed by Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, and Tyler Adams, are heavy favourites to advance. Home advantage at a World Cup is historically significant — and the USA will have raucous crowds for every match.

Türkiye (25th) are the most dangerous opposition in this group and the wildcard draw that could complicate things. They beat Spain in Euro 2024's group stage and have a combative, high-energy style that suits tournament football. Australia, the Socceroos, qualified from a tough AFC qualifying campaign and have Premier League-quality players throughout. Paraguay are the group's outsiders — solid CONMEBOL contenders who concede few goals but will struggle to manufacture enough chances against stronger opposition.

USA vs Türkiye is the match that decides Group D. Whoever wins almost certainly tops the group. The Turks are not a side the USMNT should take for granted.

#9 Hardest — Group A

A
Ranked #9 Hardest · Balanced Group
🇲🇽 Mexico  ·  🇰🇷 South Korea  ·  🇨🇿 Czechia  ·  🇿🇦 South Africa
Difficulty ★★½
✓ Mexico advance ✓ South Korea advance ⚡ Czechia dark horse

Group A is one of the most evenly matched of the tournament. Mexico (15th) are the top seed and co-host — playing matches at Azteca and AT&T Stadium, they benefit from enormous home support across all three group games. The pressure on El Tri to finally escape the Round of 16 curse (they've exited at that stage in seven consecutive tournaments) is immense, and that pressure can cut both ways.

South Korea (25th) qualify for World Cups with remarkable consistency and always carry a capable squad into the tournament. Czechia (41st) are more dangerous than their ranking suggests — they qualified comfortably and have a pragmatic, organised style that makes them difficult to beat. South Africa, co-hosting for the first time since 2010, are the outsiders but will have passionate crowd support and nothing to lose.

#10 Hardest — Group G

G
Ranked #10 Hardest · Belgium's Group
🇧🇪 Belgium  ·  🇮🇷 Iran  ·  🇪🇬 Egypt  ·  🇳🇿 New Zealand
Difficulty ★★
✓ Belgium advance ✓ Iran or Egypt for 2nd ✗ New Zealand long odds

Belgium's Golden Generation may be fading — Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne are both past 30 and carrying injury histories — but there is still enough quality here to dominate this group. Their FIFA ranking of around 3rd–5th masks some genuine vulnerabilities, but Iran (21st), Egypt (29th), and New Zealand (85th) are not the opponents to expose them.

Iran are a capable, tactically disciplined side under their current manager and will push for second. Egypt, with Mohamed Salah almost certainly playing his final World Cup, have a focal point and talisman around whom the group's most compelling story will be told. Salah at 33 will be desperate to deliver on the biggest stage. New Zealand defied all expectations in 2010 by going unbeaten in a group with Italy — they will not be pushovers.

#11 Hardest — Group E

E
Ranked #11 Hardest · Germany's Group
🇩🇪 Germany  ·  🇨🇮 Côte d'Ivoire  ·  🇪🇨 Ecuador  ·  🇨🇼 Curaçao
Difficulty ★½
✓ Germany advance ✓ Côte d'Ivoire or Ecuador for 2nd ✗ Curaçao historic debutants

Germany drew one of the most favourable groups in the tournament. The average FIFA ranking across Group E is the second highest of any group (i.e. second weakest) and Germany (9th) are the clear runaway favourite. Under Julian Nagelsmann, the new-look Germany side is more direct, more physical, and less reliant on the suffocating possession game that made them brittle against high-press opponents. They should cruise to the Round of 32.

Côte d'Ivoire, reigning AFCON champions, are a genuinely strong team with Sébastien Haller leading the attack. Ecuador qualified from CONMEBOL and always carry physical, direct qualities that cause problems. Curaçao are the headline story — they are the smallest nation by population (156,115 people) ever to qualify for a World Cup. They deserve every match they get.

A cautionary note: Germany have not won a knockout match at a major tournament since their 2014 World Cup title. The group is easy; the expectation is heavy. If Germany stumble against Côte d'Ivoire — as they did against Japan and South Korea in recent tournaments — the narrative collapses very quickly.

#12 — Group B (Easiest)

B
Ranked #12 Easiest · Canada's Group
🇨🇦 Canada  ·  🇨🇭 Switzerland  ·  🇶🇦 Qatar  ·  🇧🇦 Bosnia & Herz.
Difficulty ★ EASIEST
✓ Canada advance ✓ Switzerland advance ⚡ Qatar and Bosnia fight for 3rd

There is no question: Group B is the easiest pool at the 2026 World Cup — and it is not close. When Italy failed to qualify and Bosnia and Herzegovina (65th in FIFA) came through the playoff in their place, what was already a gentle group became historically soft. The average FIFA ranking across the four teams is 42.25 — more than 20 ranking places weaker than the next easiest group. Switzerland (19th) are the highest-ranked team here.

Canada (30th), co-hosting the tournament with matches in Toronto and Vancouver, will play in front of enormous home support. Alphonso Davies at the peak of his powers as the best left-back on the planet, Jonathan David prolific in Ligue 1, and a core of English Premier League talent makes this team genuinely capable of going deep into the knockout rounds — not just qualifying.

Switzerland are steady, well-organised, and tournament-experienced. They will qualify without drama. Qatar, as 2022 hosts, proved they can compete and will not embarrass themselves. Bosnia are the unknown quantity, but at 65th in the world they face a significant step up in class.

Canada's golden opportunity: This is the most favourable group draw a World Cup host nation has received in modern memory. If Canada cannot reach the Round of 16 from Group B, it will be considered a major failure. The expectation is not just to qualify — it is to top the group.

Rank Group Teams Key Match Difficulty
1 I France, Norway, Senegal, Iraq Norway vs Senegal ☠️ Death
2 C Brazil, Morocco, Scotland, Haiti Brazil vs Morocco ★★★★★
3 F Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia Netherlands vs Japan ★★★★½
4 L England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama England vs Croatia ★★★★
5 K Portugal, Colombia, DR Congo, Uzbekistan Portugal vs Colombia ★★★½
6 J Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan Algeria vs Austria ★★★
7 H Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde Spain vs Uruguay ★★★
8 D USA, Paraguay, Australia, Türkiye USA vs Türkiye ★★★
9 A Mexico, South Korea, Czechia, South Africa Mexico vs South Korea ★★½
10 G Belgium, Iran, Egypt, New Zealand Iran vs Egypt ★★
11 E Germany, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Curaçao Germany vs Côte d'Ivoire ★½
12 B Canada, Switzerland, Qatar, Bosnia & Herz. Canada vs Switzerland ★ Easiest
The big takeaway: The 2026 draw is exceptionally lopsided. The top half of the bracket — Groups I, C, F, and L — contains the majority of the tournament's top-ten nations. Teams who draw a "soft" group not only qualify more easily, they arrive in the Round of 32 with fresher legs and higher confidence. Group B's winners may well be the most rested side at the knockout stage.
