Four years ago Qatar hosted the World Cup. They lost all three group stage games — only the second host nation ever to be eliminated at that stage, after South Africa in 2010. This time is different. Qatar qualified for 2026 through the AFC qualifiers on sporting merit alone — the first time they have ever done so. Nobody gave them a spot. They earned it.

The road was anything but straightforward. Qatar began comfortably, winning their second round group with 16 points from six games. The third round was more turbulent — inconsistent performances before a crucial home win over Iran secured their passage into the fourth round. Then came the most dramatic moment of their campaign — a 2-1 win over UAE, with headers from Boualem Khoukhi and Pedro Miguel doing the damage, before Qatar were reduced to ten men in the 87th minute and held on through eight minutes of added time to seal qualification. That kind of pressure moment, navigated away from home soil, tells you something about how far this squad has come.

Striker Almoez Ali — Qatar's all-time top scorer and the leading scorer in Asian qualifying with 12 goals — and creative winger Akram Afif are the two players to watch. Captain Hassan Al-Haydos, 35, brings experience and leadership with 188 caps — the most in Qatar's history.

Group B — Qatar, Canada, Switzerland, and Bosnia — is a tough ask. Switzerland are the highest ranked side, Canada are co-hosts playing in front of home crowds, and Bosnia are no pushovers. Advancing from this group would be a genuine statement that Qatar belong at this level. The 2022 group stage exit still hangs over this team. Every game in 2026 is a chance to answer it.
